UPDATE ON TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SALESFORCE TRANSIT CENTER

Background:

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), owner and operator of the Salesforce Transit Center, temporarily closed the facility in September 2018 as a precaution after workers discovered fissures in two steel beams on the bus deck above Fremont Street. A repair and reinforcement project will be complete by June 1, 2019.  The TJPA is fully cooperating with an ongoing independent review by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission called for by Mayor London Breed and Mayor Libby Schaaf. The TJPA will announce a reopening date after the review concludes.

Update:

  • The repair at the Fremont Street location is complete and shoring is being removed during nighttime closures the week of April 23rd.
  • The shoring on First Street will be removed during nighttime closures in May after the reinforcement project is complete.
  • Four weeks of nighttime street closures are required to remove shoring, restore lights, restore fire and life safety systems and ceiling panels, and reestablish Muni overhead lines.
  • The project will be complete by June 1, 2019.
  • The Project Team continues their building-wide review to ascertain if other areas need further review and/or inspections. No issues, to date, found.

 Next Steps:

  • Conduct any additional inspections proposed by independent peer reviewers.
  • Recommission the building, which includes inspections and permits from independent city and state agencies.
  • Reopen the Transit Center and Park to the public.
  • Resume Bus Operations.

Transit agencies continue bus service at the Temporary Terminal at Howard and Main. Commuters may contact their bus operator or call 511 for transit information.
