UPDATE ON TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SALESFORCE TRANSIT CENTER

Background:

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), owner and operator of the Salesforce Transit Center, temporarily closed the facility in September 2018 as a precaution after workers discovered fissures in two steel beams on the bus deck above Fremont Street. Before reopening, the TJPA must:

  • Repair the beams
  • Reinforce a similarly designed area at First Street (although no issues were found at this location, it will be reinforced because of its similar design and load conditions).
  • Conduct an exhaustive review of the facility
  • Complete a facility-wide life & safety reinspection program with city and state oversight
  • Fully cooperate with the independent review by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and called for by Mayor London Breed and Mayor Libby Schaaf.

After the fissures were discovered, the TJPA’s contractor installed a multi-level shoring system at Fremont and First streets as the independent review and monitoring continue. To date, no additional fissures have been found. Bolts in the surrounding areas around the fractured girders over Fremont street were tested and none were found to be damaged or cracked.

Update:

  • The repair of Fremont Street and reinforcement of First Street are underway and scheduled to be complete by June 2019.
  • Steel plate material for the repairs and reinforcement were machined in Pennsylvania and delivered to the steel fabricator, Herrick, in Stockton in March.
  • The steel fabricator then drilled the plates and delivered them to the transit center.
  • Onsite preparation work is complete and installation is underway.
  • The Project Team continues their building-wide review to ascertain if other areas need further review and/or inspections. No issues, to date, found.

Next Steps:

  • Conduct any additional inspections proposed by independent peer reviewers.
  • Recommission the building, which includes inspections and permits from independent city and state agencies.
  • Reopen the Transit Center and Park to the public.
  • Resume Bus Operations.

Transit agencies continue bus service at the Temporary Terminal at Howard and Main. Commuters may contact their bus operator or call 511 for transit information.
