UPDATE ON TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SALESFORCE TRANSIT CENTER

Background:

The Salesforce Transit Center is temporarily closed. In September 2018, workers discovered two fissures in steel beams on the bus deck above Fremont Street. After several inspections and out of an abundance of caution, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) temporarily closed the Transit Center.

This is a localized issue within the transit center. The TJPA’s contractor installed a multi-level shoring system at Fremont and First streets as an independent review and monitoring continue. No additional fissures have been found.

The TJPA is working swiftly to determine a cause and reopen the facility, but must balance that with the responsibility of fully cooperating with the independent review by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).

Update:

  • The MTC Peer Review Panel presented their first assessment to the TJPA Board of Directors as to the cause of the fractured beams.
  • The Engineer of Record, Thornton Tomasetti, has completed their preliminary design to repair the Fremont street girders and presented it to the TJPA Board of Directors.  Along with providing information regarding the repair design, Thornton Tomasetti also reported that they have performed an analysis of the adjacent beams and confirmed there was no additional damage.
  • Repair designs were submitted to the MTC Peer Review Panel and the TJPA Board of Directors in December 2018.
  • The MTC Peer Review Panel is developing recommendations for additional inspections in the transit center to be conducted before reopening.
  • Repair Design will be finalized and approved by the MTC Peer Review Panel in January 2019
  • A construction schedule to repair the girders will be finalized in January 2019.

Next Steps

  • MTC Peer Review accepts findings report and approves recommended permanent repair
  • Repair/retrofit the Transit Center and Perform Structural Evaluations
  • Complete any additional inspections proposed by peer reviewers
  • Reopen the Transit Center and Park to the public
  • Resume Bus Operations
