Temporary Closure of Salesforce Transit Center

Work on a shoring system at the Salesforce Transit Center at Fremont Street between Howard and Mission streets continued today and will continue into early next week, moving the scheduled reopening date of the one block closure. The street will reopen to traffic and the public on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.
Work on the street level at Fremont Street is complete. Due to the complexity of the four-level designed shoring system, the work is continuing through the weekend and early next week on the bus deck and in the two levels of the train box.
“It is important that we have an extremely robust shoring system to ensure that all levels of the transit center are safe and secure. Unfortunately, this requires us to keep the street closed until this work is complete. We will reopen Fremont Street as soon as safely possible and apologize for the ongoing impact to the public,” said Mark Zabaneh, Executive Director of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority.
First Street: Street level work on First Street is complete for this week. There will be one more night time closure (between 9 pm and 5 am) next week, date to be determined. The street has a similar design as Fremont Street, and is also receiving a shoring system and will ultimately be permanently reinforced.
Background
The Salesforce Transit Center is temporarily closed. On the morning of Tuesday, September 25, 2018, workers discovered a fissure on a steel beam in the ceiling of the third level bus deck near Fremont Street. After several inspections and out of an abundance of caution, the TJPA temporarily closed the Transit Center and Fremont Street between Mission and Howard streets. Further inspections revealed a second fissure at the same location on a separate beam.
This is a localized issue within the Transit Center. Inspections and monitoring are ongoing and no additional fissures have been found. First Street, a similarly designed area of the transit center, is being proactively reinforced with a similar reinforcement plan that Fremont Street will receive. The first step to reinforcing First Street is installing a similar type of shoring system. This work is ongoing. Work on First Street was limited to evenings (9 pm – 5 am) outside of commute hours to minimize traffic impacts. There will be one more night closure the week of October 15th for this initial shoring system work.
Transit agencies are providing bus service out of the Temporary Transbay Terminal at Howard and Main streets while the transit center is closed. Commuters are encouraged to call 511 or go to 511.org for up-to-date transit information, or to contact their bus operator directly.
We apologize for the impacts to our transit riders and the public for this temporary closure. It is an inconvenience and we are committed to reopening the transit center as soon as safely possible.
